Applying the Art of Agility in Business

We yearn for stability, something approaching “normal”, a process we can become comfortable with, a routine, a trouble free existence… No?

Meanwhile, in an ever-changing landscape, the new strategy is all about constant adaptation and – be quick about it. Leaders, in an increasingly complex world, have no choice but to master the ability to learn and adapt quickly.  Leaders have to motivate their teams to eagerly encourage, accept, and rapidly apply – change.

Winston Churchill said: “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

“Churchill the Agile PM: Lessons for Business Today”, a book by Mark Kozak, describes the strategies Churchill used to overcome incredible odds in the summer of 1940. His ‘agile’ approach to any challenge, his quick assessment of the situation, the resources available, his options, and then a quick decision, gave him that essential edge over many a political foe.

The need for agility

  • Most future developments are difficult to anticipate, but there are two trends we can predict with great certainty: the pace of change and the level of complexity will both continue to grow. For over a decade, organisational change experts have been emphasising the need to develop “agile” companies.
  • Companies need to develop a higher level of organisational agility.
  • Companies need more leaders who embody a corresponding level of agility.
  • Senior executives have ranked “agility” among the most critical leadership competencies needed in companies today.

Managing the change process

Agile Leadership is measured by the ability of a leader not only to respond rapidly to change, but to execute such change efficiently and painlessly for their team and, transparently for their clients. Planned change should be seamless for the customer. The leader who anticipates and embraces change as a matter of routine and collaborates between and among all layers of the enterprise, will deliver incremental value.  Agile leaders realise they have to harness the driving forces of ‘change’ in order to constantly transform their organisation. Their challenge is that few managers have the opportunity to learn how to apply such skills before they are faced with a critical business dilemma and as a result learning ‘in the job’ can scar performance and careers. The ability of your organisation to change helps in maintaining your competitive advantage in the marketplace. The ability to change faster than the competition gives you an advantage in achieving the status of an industry leader.
